Science Inquiry Studio Governance, Collaboration, and Licensing Principles

Science Inquiry Studio is a collaborative educational and research initiative that brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, science education, instructional design, and classroom practice. This document describes the project's operating principles and is intended to provide transparency regarding its development, governance, and future dissemination.

Mission

  • Develop high-quality AI-supported tools that strengthen scientific inquiry and engineering design.
  • Support research, classroom innovation, and educator collaboration.
  • Build a sustainable platform that can evolve through long-term partnerships.

Stewardship

  • Science Inquiry Studio is developed and maintained by Terminus Technology Inc, which serves as the steward of the software platform.
  • The project is developed in collaboration with the UCI Digital Learning Lab, the UCI Science Project, partner school districts, and other educational collaborators.
  • Collaborative participation does not imply shared ownership of the software platform.

Project Collaboration

  • Faculty, staff, students, teachers, researchers, and approved collaborators may participate in design, software development, evaluation, documentation, and instructional resource development.
  • Authorized project collaborators are intended participants in the ongoing development of the platform and may continue to participate in future development activities subject to project governance.

Development and Governance

  • Active development is coordinated by the project leadership.
  • Source-code repositories may remain private during active development.
  • Repository access is granted to authorized project personnel and approved collaborators.
  • Only designated maintainers may merge changes into the official project.
  • Major design decisions and release schedules are determined by the project leadership.

Future Licensing

  • The project leadership shares the goal of making Science Inquiry Studio broadly available under an appropriate open-source license when the platform is sufficiently mature.
  • The timing, scope, and licensing of public software releases will be determined by the project leadership.
  • Public releases may include mechanisms for community contributions while preserving maintainer oversight of the official project.

Community Participation

  • Educators, researchers, and developers are encouraged to share ideas, feature requests, and bug reports.
  • Proposed code contributions are subject to maintainer review.
  • Acceptance or rejection of outside contributions is solely the responsibility of the project maintainers and does not confer governance authority or commit access.

Commitment

  • The project is committed to thoughtful collaboration, responsible stewardship, and broad educational impact.
  • These principles are intended to promote continuity, transparency, and sustainable growth while preserving the integrity of the platform and its educational mission.
